San Antonio Joe

With all the heat in Central Texas, I decided to get the heck out of dodge and journey from San Diego up the Pacific Coast Highway to Portland with my girlfriend. With that being said, An Average Joe in San Antonio will temporarily turn a little bit West Coast. But until then, here’s the quick bites for the week:

  • Today is the San Antonio Foodspotting Guide Day! If you haven’t done so already, go create your own Foodspotting Guide and publish it today.  This is an effort to let the world know that San Antone has a good food scene going on and an opportunity for you to share some of your favorite restaurants.  After you make your guide, be sure to Tweet out the URL and include “@Foodspotting” and the hashtag “#FoodspotSA” so that folks can find your guides.  Check out my guides for Mexican Food, Margaritas, Beer Joints, and the newest one for Burgers!
  • The Ranger Creek Brewery Tour is a ton of fun so be sure to drop by on a Saturday for a scheduled tour to see San Antonio’s only craft brewery in operation.  For $10 you get the tour, a glass to take home, and three tickets that you can redeem for beer.  I personally liked La Bestia Amiable a whole lot and the Oatmeal Pale Ale ain’t too shabby either.

  • The food related website of the week goes to Dish Trip which is sponsored by Southwest Airlines to visit restaurants and food bloggers in different cities.  Mary, Amy, Gary, and Jason of Dish Trip dropped into San Antonio this past Monday and Tuesday and I got to show them a lot of my favorite places.  Those were two late nights filled with food and beverages, and even though I am still tired, I had a blast! Video from their trip should be posted soon.
  • My favorite non food blog of the week was tweeted out by Tristan Walker and it is a Tumblr blog called Awesome People Hanging Out Together.  It is basically a bunch of pictures and videos of famous people paired together.  Think Elvis visiting Nixon in the White House and you get the drift.  You can spend hours checking out this site.

Thanks for the reply. Well said. Too bad HB 660 didn't pass. It's also too bad the city of SA didn't welcome a new location for Freetail downtown.

I view Freetail and Blue Star as more of a gastro pub because they cannot sell/distribute their beer in stores whereas Ranger Creek is available for general purchase. With San Antonio's tradition of having large scale brewery's in town, it is nice to see that once again we have one making beer available for purchase in stores. Portland was awesome; the Rogue Brewery was so good, had Dead Man's Ale and Brutal IPA. OK OK, yeah, they are a gastropub as well, but they can distribute their beer, I guess that is what I was meaning in reference to Ranger Creek being the "only" craft brewery in town ;)

I agree. Ranger Creek's La Bestia is delicious. I've yet to visit this brewery, but hope to do so soon. Thanks for the info. I'm just not sure Ranger Creek is San Antonio's ONLY craft brewery in operation. What about Freetail and Blue Star? By the way, I'm so envious of you going to the west coast and visiting Portland. It's 106 degrees today in SA today!
